The annual church Christmas pageant is the same every year, a fact that thrills the usual director, Mrs. Armstrong, and bores the children. This year, however, circumstances have changed. Mrs. Armstrong is in the hospital with a broken leg, so Beth’s mom, Grace Bradley, gets roped into directing. Although inexperienced in such endeavors, Mrs. Bradley takes on her responsibility with enthusiasm and nervous resolve. Then she meets the Herdman children—the toughest, meanest group of smart- mouthed children imaginable. They are bullies through and through, and only find their way to church because they hear refreshments are served. In fact, they have never even heard the biblical Christmas story before. When Mrs. Bradley tries to cast the lead roles in the pageant, no one volunteers except the Herdman kids. Even though she is nervous to do so, she casts them and sends all the church members into an uproar.!

Play rehearsals are an absolute nightmare. Since the Christmas story is new to the Herdman’s, they rewrite the play with a bit of a skewed perspective. The title, in their opinions, should really be “Revenge at Bethlehem” with the Wise Men as child-welfare workers, and the Angel of the Lord as a comic book super hero. They cannot believe that Herod, the evil villain out to kill the baby and clearly the most exciting character, is not even present in the play!!

Faced with these six hooligans, an outraged Ladies’ Aid Society, a disapproving Reverend, not to mention the dozens of assorted angels, shepherds, choirs, and interfering parents, Mrs. Bradley is certain the whole pageant will be a disaster.!
But when the curtain goes up, everyone is speechless. This year’s Christmas pageant, led by the Herdman kids, comes together with more energetic sincerity than ever before, everyone learns the true meaning of Christmas and the pageant is appropriately declared the best pageant ever!!
